About Our Art

For over 12 years, we have been captivated by the underwater world, snorkelling off the Caribbean islands and the Belizean Barrier Reef. Our watercolour paintings are inspired by the countless hours we’ve spent exploring these vibrant marine environments and the thousands of photos we’ve taken to capture their beauty. Our favourite images from these journeys serve as the foundation for our work, allowing us to share the magical world beneath the waves with others. Please note that every effort has been made to correctly identify the species in our art but some errors may occur.

In our paintings, we strive to depict the delicate interplay of light, colour, and texture that defines coral reefs, sponges, and tropical fish. Watercolour, with its fluidity and unpredictability, is the perfect medium to mirror the ever-changing nature of the sea. It allows us to capture the subtle gradients of the underwater environment, from the gentle sway of corals to the vivid hues of tropical fish darting through the water. Each painting in
Julia’s Gallery and Al’s Gallery are an invitation to immerse oneself in the serene yet vibrant underwater world, to feel the calm yet powerful energy of the ocean, and to reflect on our connection to these fragile ecosystems.

Through these works, we aim to evoke a sense of wonder and awareness of the intricate beauty that lies beneath the surface. Our paintings are a call to appreciate and protect our oceans, celebrating their resilience while also acknowledging their vulnerability in the face of human impact. We hope that by bringing these underwater scenes to life, viewers will be inspired to consider their own relationship with the natural world and the steps we can take to preserve its beauty for future generations.

Our website, Water in Colour, reflects the heart of our work. We chose this name to tie together our chosen medium—watercolour—with our subject matter, the life that thrives beneath the surface of the ocean.
